A pensioner who was shot in the leg in a gun attack was recovering in hospital last night.

The victim, named locally as Maurice Isaacson (66), was blasted by a gunman wearing a balaclava in a brutal attack in a Dublin pub on Monday.

The shooting happened in the Barn House pub in Cork Street in Dublin 8 at 11.30pm.

A member of the bar staff told the Herald last night that he heard the wounded customer was recovering. When asked about Mr Isaacson, he replied: "He's all right, he's okay. He's still in hospital."

Mr Isaacson was rushed to Saint James's Hospital by an ambulance team who went to the scene of the shooting.

The victim had been hit in the calf when the masked man opened fire in the pub with a handgun.

Mr Isaacson's injuries were described as "non-life threatening".

It was said he needed surgery to remove the bullet from his leg.

Gardai said the gunman escaped from the scene and a criminal investigation was under way.

The scene was preserved for a technical examination.

Mr Isaacson has an address at Dolphin House, directly across the road from The Barn House pub.

A brother of his declined to comment on the shooting yesterday, but said Mr Isaacson was "okay" following the incident.

Garda forensic experts from the technical bureau arrived at the pub shortly before 11.30am yesterday to begin an analysis of the scene. The pub remained closed for several hours.

While no arrests have been made, gardai said they are following a definite line of inquiry and hoped to interview witnesses who were in the pub when the shooting happened.

Gardai are also appealing for witnesses who were in the area at the time to contact Kevin Street garda station on 01 6669400, the garda confidential telephone line 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
