OAP drove wrong way for 20km in M9 terror

GARDA say it is a miracle nobody was injured after an elderly motorist drove the wrong direction on a motorway for 20km.

The confused driver caused havoc on the M9 motorway last night when he drove against oncoming traffic.

AA Roadwatch put out an urgent warning to other motorists as gardai scrambled to the scene.

The man had realised he had travelled too far along the motorway when he was near Carlow. But instead of turning off the motorway and coming back onto it on the other side, he turned his car around and drove straight into on-coming traffic on the wrong side of the carriageway.

"The driver knew he was on the wrong side of the motorway and was trying to get off, but he could not," said one source. "It was a genuine case of panic setting in."

Shocked motorists swerved to avoid the oncoming car, and up to five cars were damaged as the driver clipped wing mirrors as he drove northbound along the southbound stretch of the Dublin-Waterford Road.

Incredibly, no one was hurt in the incident which happened around 7.30pm.

The man got on the motorway around Naas Co Kildare and went southbound as far as Leighlinbridge near Carlow.

Athy gardai are investigating the incident.
