An unlikely combination of Daniel O'Donnell and I'm a Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here! is helping give UTV Ireland a much-needed ratings boost.

Figures released this week have revealed that the new station received its biggest viewership to date last Monday, thanks to the two hit shows.

It seems that Daniel & Majella's B&B Road Trip and 'I'm a Celebrity . . .' gave the broadcaster an all-day share of 11pc - its highest since the channel launched last January.

The surprise hit programme featuring the Donegal crooner, which sees him and his wife travelling around the country to stay in B&Bs, pulled in an average of 230,000 viewers.

This was the equivalent of a 15pc audience share.

The programme has now been snapped up by American channel PBS as the quirky couple go Stateside, with speculation that a UK channel could also follow suit.

The show fronted by the Strictly Come Dancing star was then followed by I'm a Celebrity, which aired at 9pm and is currently pulling in an average of 385,000 viewers.

The star-packed show previously aired on TV3 but they lost the rights to the programme last year after they were snapped up by UTV Ireland.

British soaps Emmerdale and Coronation Street also continue to draw a peak-time audience to UTV Ireland.

Last Monday's Coronation Street drew an average of 417,000 and 408,000 for two episodes.

Speaking about the figures, Mary Curtis, UTV Ireland's Head of Channel, said they were delighted to be finally making their mark.

"UTV Ireland reached 2.3m people last week and we are delighted that Monday marked UTV Ireland's highest ratings since the channel launched - to do so with such a significant share of viewing, within our first year of broadcasting, is fantastic," she said.

"These programmes are all exclusive to UTV Ireland and are proving hugely successful with our audience."

She added how from next month, UTV Ireland will have the exclusive rights to Jeremy Kyle in Ireland, and January will see the new series of Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway - previously a TV3 show.

They have also signed up former TV3 star Lorraine Keane to front a six-part celebrity-driven interview show in the New Year.
