Nightspots defy the downturn to expand
TWO of Dublin's most popular nightspots are looking to expand, despite the economic downturn.
Hip venue The Sugar Club on Leeson Street and Searson's on Baggot Street, a favourite pub of the rugby set, both want to add on.
Dublin City Council gave the go-ahead to Davy Hickey Properties Ltd to add a two-storey extension to the front of The Sugar Club building.
The 113sqm development will be used as a foyer and cafe.
Permission was granted despite an objection from the adjoining Hourican's pub which complained the plan would be "extremely detrimental" to its business.
Searson's is seeking to add an outdoor seating and tables area for 10 people to front of building.
Figures show the pub sector suffered a 14.1pc decline in the first seven months of this year following a near 9pc decline last year.
