New dad Stokes reveals partner watched hat-trick from maternity ward

SOCCER star Anthony Stokes has revealed that his pregnant girlfriend watched him score a hat-trick while she lay in bed in the maternity ward.

The 23-year-old Celtic player said partner Debbie Lawlor (24) tuned in to see him play just hours before giving birth.

As the Dubliner put in a star performance during the Hoops' Scottish Cup tie against Peterhead earlier this month, new mum Debbie watched the action from her iPad.

The match took place only hours before the happy couple's bundle of joy, baby Bobby, arrived and Anthony said that knowing Debbie was about to give birth spurred him on.

The proud pair celebrated the arrival of their new addition after Anthony travelled back from the Highlands on January 8.

He said: "I was delighted with the hat-trick and obviously my son being born.

"I knew Debbie was going in to be induced at two o'clock on the Sunday so I knew come kick-off she would be in the hospital.

"She ended up sitting in her hospital bed watching the game on her iPad. It was a good effort."

The Republic of Ireland international added: "In a way, that maybe made me even more determined but I didn't really think about it until after I got the hat-trick. I realised that was a really good way of celebrating. It was a long drive home, though. It dragged because I was looking forward to getting back to her.

"It all went well and I got a lot of messages from the fans. It's nice they have that chance to interact with me and I really appreciate it."
