The net is closing in on a drug addict who is the chief suspect in the fatal stabbing of a 37-year-old man whose body was dumped in a west Dublin laneway.

Senior sources have revealed that detectives are "very happy" with the progress that they have made in the murder investigation into the violent death of Andrew Guerrine.

"There have been two arrests already in this case and there will be more to follow. The investigation is at an advanced stage," a source explained.

"The victim was attacked in a house in Tallaght and his body brought to the location where it was found."

A source added that gardai have dismissed a witness report that the murdered man was last seen alive getting out of a taxi in Tallaght on the night before his body was discovered.

The body of Mr Guerrine (37) was found on Saturday, May 23, in Steelstown Lane, Rathcoole, by a passer-by in the early hours of the morning.

Originally from New Street in Dublin's south inner city, Mr Guerrine was known to gardai for his involvement in small-scale drug dealing.

The two arrests in the case happened in the Tallaght area last month and both suspects were released without charge after being questioned at Clondalkin Garda Station.

Mr Guerrine's body was discovered at a gateway on the roadside on Steelstown Lane near Rathcoole, off the N7 motorway, just three weeks after a female infant was found at the same location.

The abandoned baby, named Maria by hospital staff, was found wrapped in a fleece blanket and placed in a shopping bag on May 8.

Officers said they believe that Mr Guerrine's killers used the spot knowing the area was not covered with CCTV cameras.

"Gardai are very hopeful that there will be charges in this case," a source said.

Mr Guerrine's funeral took place on June 4 at the Church of Our Lady in Mount Carmel in Dublin, two weeks after he was found with his throat slashed.

In a memorial post on Facebook, the family of Mr Guerrine described him as the "beloved son of Dolores and Paul, and much loved father of Katie".

The statement said he was "sadly missed by his loving family".
