Mystery of pensioner found with throat cut

A partially blind man in his late 70s suffered injuries to his throat in a bizarre and mysterious incident.

Well-respected local man Frank Costello is continuing to recover in hospital after the strange incident which unfolded in his home at Mohill, Co Leitrim, on Friday night.

Mr Costello suffered a puncture wound to his neck but gardai have not yet established whether there was any foul play involved.

Sources say that there is no evidence that a break-in or a burglary happened at his home in the incident which resulted in Mr Costello being transferred to Sligo General Hospital where he remains today.

Strange

It is understood that Mr Costello has not yet given officers a full statement about what happened but he has been interviewed by gardai.

A source explained: "This is a very strange case and contrary to local rumours, this man's house was not ransacked. The property was locked and there are no reports of anyone else being in the house."

"Gardai have not received a criminal complaint in relation to it."

It is understood that Mr Costello called an ambulance after he felt blood on his neck after becoming dizzy.

Gardai did not become aware of the incident until Sunday night and yesterday a technical examination of Mr Costello's house took place to try to establish exactly what happened.
