Murdered couple 'a force of nature', mourners hear

The elderly couple killed in their Donegal home were a "force of nature" when working together on a project, their daughter told their funeral.

Maureen Cuddihy said her parents, retired teacher Jimmy and retired nurse Kathleen Cuddihy, were at the centre of the community in Carndonagh.

The popular couple were found dead at their home in Churchtown last Thursday morning. An axe was recovered at the scene.

Their youngest son, Julian (42), has been charged with their murders, and Judge Kevin Kilrane has ordered a psychiatric report to be carried out .

Heartbroken Ms Cuddihy told a packed Church of the Sacred Heart in Carndonagh yesterday that her parents would be remembered as loving, kind and beautiful people.

"When they worked together on a project they were like a force of nature," she said.

"As both captain and president of the golf club they strived to make it the best.

"Over the last five days we've come to realise how popular and much-loved our parents were and just how many people they actually helped.

"Mum must have had half of Inishowen in the back of the ambulance and Dad has taught so many people maths over the years and given them grinds.

"They were wonderful parents to all of us, and when money was tight in the house there was always money for education."

A respectful silence hung over the Inishowen market town as businesses closed and people lined the streets while the couple were conveyed to their final resting place, led by a garda escort .

The coffins containing the remains of Mr Cuddihy (77) and his wife (73) were carried from their home for about 200 yards down the Buncrana Road and followed by hundreds of grieving local people.

The mourners were led by three of the couple's four children, James, Delilah and Maureen.

Local ambulance personnel provided a guard of honour as a reflection of Mrs Cuddihy's years of dedicated service as a nurse. They were accompanied by teachers and other staff from Carndonagh Community School, where Mr Cuddihy had taught.
