Murder-charge dad faces trial

A MAN charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Dublin in February has been sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court.

Father-of-one Aidan Byrne (33), who was from St Mary's Mansions, in Dublin, had been shot as he was sitting in the passenger seat of a Toyota Corolla, at Drumalee Avenue, off the North Circular Road, on February 20 last.

John Douglas (25) of O'Devaney Gardens, in north inner city Dublin, had been charged with his murder in March. Yesterday at Dublin District Court he was served with a book of evidence.



Charities fear funding cuts

Almost a fifth of charities fear they will be forced to close their doors within the next year after cuts in funding, it emerged today.

Concerns were also raised that thousands of jobs would be lost and frontline services across health, education and social services decimated if Government support is pulled.

Deirdre Garvey, chief executive of The Wheel, said more people than ever before now rely on charitable organisations.



Woman left on plane alone

A woman who fell asleep on a flight to Philadelphia said she was horrified to wake up and find herself alone.

Ginger McGuire said no-one had woken her when the United Express plane landed early on Tuesday, more than three hours earlier. She said she paced the aisle for about 15 minutes until the locked door opened and police demanded identification.

"Waking up to an empty airplane and not being able to get out -- it was very horrifying," Ms McGuire (36) said, as her lawyer announced a lawsuit.



Author moves in next to Palin

Former US vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin said she would begin work on a fence around her Alaska home to keep her new neighbour -- an author writing a book about her -- from peering in.

Mrs Palin joked with a reporter outside the gate of her lakeside home in Wasilla yesterday about having to build a fence to protect her family's privacy. But she would not comment further.
