A YOUTH found guilty of taking part in a violent mugging has been ordered to pay €1,000 compensation to his victim or he will be detained.

Judge Bryan Smyth heard that the defendant (17), who had pleaded not guilty to robbery of a 17-year-old boy, at Beechwood Lawn, in Killiney, south Dublin, on August 25 last year, had previously been given a suspended sentence for assault causing harm. The Dublin Children's Court heard that five teenage friends were going home after a night out when a youth from another group attacked one of them.

They alleged the defendant, who had drunk "ten to 12 pints", joined in and took a wallet from the boy, who was being beaten.

They said the defendant, who claimed not to rob the wallet, did not appear to be the main instigator but appeared to have joined in the robbery.

Judge Smyth gave the youth three months to pay the €1,000.
