Mounties search for missing Irishman
A search is being carried out in Canada for a Co Mayo man who went missing while swimming with friends.
David Gavin (26) failed to surface when he dived off a bridge in British Columbia on Friday afternoon.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation in the Kinbasket Lake area.
Mr Gavin, who is from Castlebar, moved to Canada only a few months ago to start a new job.
Police contacted his family, who were expected to arrive in Canada last night.
His parents work for Mayo County Council and the family is said to be well-known.
Mr Gavin was a member of Breaffy GAA.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement: "The department is aware of an incident in British Columbia involving an Irish citizen.
"Our embassy in Ottawa is liaising closely with the local authorities."
