Mother of presenter Collins dies aged 95
RTE presenter Ronan Collins was absent from the airwaves yesterday after his elderly mother passed away .
The popular DJ (62) did not present his noon slot on RTE Radio One as it was announced his mother Ethna (95) died in the early hours of yesterday morning.
She passed away just days before the 16th anniversary of the death of her husband, Des, who died on March 28, 1999.
Dubliner Ethna lived her life on the north side of the city.
She was born in Glasnevin but moved to Phibsboro after getting married to Des, with whom she had six children.
A statement yesterday said Collins did not present his popular radio programme as he mourns the loss of his mother.
"She is survived by her sons Brian, Ronan, Michael and Mark and her daughters Sheila and Mary along with their husbands, wives, children and grandchildren."
In Ronan's absence, Aidan Leonard stepped in.
He admitted that while he was happy to present the RTE Radio 1 show, it was "tinged with sadness".
He paid tribute to the presenter and his deceased mother live on air at the start of Ronan's midday show, saying: "Our sympathies go out to Ronan and his family on the passing of his mum, Ethna."
