More boxing heartbreak as Joyce is knocked out
Ireland's hopes for an Olympic boxing medal suffered another devastating blow last night as David Oliver Joyce was defeated.
He exited the Olympics at the last-16 stage after an impressive performance by Azerbaijan's Albert Selimov.
The boxer was eliminated after losing on a unanimous decision.
The 29 year old, whose cousin John-Joe is also a well-known boxer, was the sixth boxer to qualify for the Irish Olympic team.
Hailing from Athy, Joyce's performance was not enough - but fans were quick to praise his efforts.
The lightweight's defeat comes after Ireland's flag bearer Paddy Barnes exited the competition on Monday.
Barnes, who was favourite for a gold medal, was trolled online following his heroic display in the 49kg division in Rio, but has since thanked everyone for their support and made light of the online abuse.
Former international boxing champ Mick Dowling, who has been commentating on the games for RTE, said Joyce lost out to a "classy" boxer.
