Missing Irish student was last seen on CCTV with a mystery man outside club
POLICE in Glasgow have located and questioned a man who they believe is seen on CCTV footage speaking with Irish student Karen Buckley who went missing after visiting a nightclub in the city.
Karen (24), from Mourneabbey, near Mallow, Co Cork, who is studying in Glasgow, disappeared after she became separated from friends on a night out.
She has not been seen since the early hours of Sunday when she left a nightclub in Dumbarton Road.
At around 1am she told friends she was going to the toilet but did not return and did not take her jacket.
She was later seen on CCTV speaking with a man outside the club and then walking westwards along Dumbar- ton Road away from the city centre.
This is in the opposite direction from the accommodation that she shares with her friends, which is about a mile-and-a-half away.
Karen's worried parents, John and Marion, travelled to Glasgow yesterday and are helping in the search efforts for their only daughter.
The youngest of a farming family, Karen has three older brothers, Kieran, Damian and Brendan.
Kieran (28), who lives in Sydney, said: "It's so hard. I'm in Australia and feel helpless. We just hope she's found safe and well.
"She doesn't just go away or go off on her own.
"She would always let people know she was coming home, which is why her friends and we are so worried."
Karen is studying for a masters degree at Glasgow Caledonian University and lives with three other students in a flat in Garnethill.
In a statement, Scottish police said she had been drinking in an apartment with friends before going to Sanctuary nightclub.
The group arrived at the club at around 11.45pm. Karen left her friends, saying she was going to the toilet, but was then seen on CCTV in the area speaking to a male outside the club.
"Friends reported Karen missing on Sunday, April 12, after feeling her behaviour to not return home was very out of character," said Insp Gavin Smith of Police Scotland.
"Her friends say she would always contact them by text or phone to let them know where she was and she doesn't appear to have been in contact with anyone."
When last seen, Karen was wearing a sleeveless, plain black jumpsuit which was low at the back and front and red stiletto heels.
Karen's father last night said he was unable to comment on the ongoing efforts to find his daughter.
A neighbour described her as a "lovely, quiet girl".
"She comes from a very well-respected family who would be very well-known in the area," she said.
Sanctuary nightclub is close to the landmark Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery and the Western Infirmary hospital and is popular with students from nearby Glasgow University.
Karen's concerned friends have set up a Facebook account with information on the search.
