McGuinness praises queen

Former IRA commander Martin McGuinness has said he likes Queen Elizabeth and he paid tribute to the British monarch's courage in agreeing to meet him.

The veteran republican first met the queen when they shook hands at a charity event in Belfast in 2012 in a highly symbolic gesture of reconciliation. "She knows my history. She knows I was a member of the IRA. She knows I was in conflict with her soldiers, yet both of us were prepared to rise above all of that," he said.

Woman freed after 17 years

A woman who spent 17 years in prison for the death of a homeless man hugged her grandchild for the first time and did a dance of happiness after she was judged innocent of murder and freed.

"I always knew that one day God would bring the truth to the light," Susan Marie Mellen (59), told reporters after she was released. A Los Angeles County judge overturned her conviction, saying that her attorney failed to properly represent her and that a woman who claimed she heard Mellen confess was a "habitual liar".

'Revenge porn' against the law

Revenge porn - when people publish sexually explicit pictures of former partners - is to be made a new offence in Britain punishable by up to two years in jail.

Distribution of a private sexual image of someone without their consent and with the intention of causing them distress will be made a specific offence in a Bill going through Parliament. The move comes after celebrities such as Rihanna and Tulisa Contostavlos fell victim to the cruel craze, and figures showed children as young as 11 had been targetted.

Viking treasure found in church

A hoard of Viking treasure has been unearthed by a metal-detecting enthusiast in one of the most significant finds of its kind ever made in Scotland.

More than 100 objects, some of them made of gold, were discovered on church land at an undisclosed location in Dumfries and Galloway. Detectorist Derek McLennan (47) had been searching the area for the last year.
