McCann replaces INM 'legend' Denieffe
Journalist Ed McCann has been appointed as the new group managing editor at Independent News & Media (INM).
He was previously deputy editor at the Belfast Telegraph, part of the INM group.
He takes over from veteran journalist Michael Denieffe who is retiring later this month following a career lasting almost 45 years with the company.
Mr Denieffe was previously group news editor, editor of the Evening Herald, pre-press manager and IT director at INM. He served two terms as a newspaper industry representative on the Press Council.
"My genuine regret in finally calling it a day after such a long and fruitful career is tempered by the fact that Independent Newspapers is now positioned to further consolidate its market position, and that my successor, Ed McCann, has all the attributes, skills and experience to play a pivotal role in that enterprise," said Mr Denieffe.
INM chief executive Robert Pitt said: "I would like to thank Michael for his great service to Independent News & Media over many years, during which he has held important senior editorial and managerial roles. He is one of the most respected newspaper professionals in Ireland. I also wish to welcome Ed McCann to his new role in INM, which is at a time of transition and positive change for the company and its digital and print offerings."
Group editor-in-chief at INM, Stephen Rae, said: "Michael is a legendary figure in the industry. He has been a tremendous servant of INM over many decades and one of our most distinguished editors.
"He has worked in every aspect of the editorial and IT disciplines, most recent- ly serving as managing edi- tor where he has been a great mentor to our journalists.
"His credibility has been acknowledged at the highest level in all areas where he has worked, from law and mediation to project management and systems implementation.
"I very much look forward to working alongside Ed McCann in an exciting and challenging period for the business."
Mr McCann joined INM in 2003.
He previously worked for the Daily Mirror, Irish News and Andersonstown News.
In his 12 years at INM he has worked as associate editor with the Irish Independent and as operations editor and most recently as deputy editor at the Belfast Telegraph.
