Man stabbed with screwdriver and beaten with baseball bat in daylight Dublin attack

A MAN was stabbed with a screwdriver and badly beaten with baseball bats in a savage attack in north Dublin.

The terrifying incident unfolded at Shangan Road in Ballymun shortly after 7pm on Sunday when two men jumped out of a silver car and launched the brutal daylight assault.

The victim of the attack has been named as local man John McGovern (23), who is known to gardai for minor offences.

"The victim is not involved in serious crime but has convictions," a source explained.

Gardai have not arrested anyone yet in relation to the attack, which led to Mr McGovern being rushed to the Mater Hospital where he was still being treated last night.

A motive for the brutal attack has not been established, but sources said that local criminals are suspects.

"This case is being treated as an assault causing harm case in which a screwdriver and baseball were used to attack the victim. His injuries were serious but not life threatening," a source explained.

In June of last year, Dublin District Court heard that a drunken McGovern, of Shangan Road, Ballymun, escaped from a patrol car but then arrived at a garda station later asking officers to take off his cuffs after his arrest in Finglas in February 2014.

The court heard McGovern started taking off his clothes while being searched.

He was handcuffed and put in a patrol car, but got out and ran away. He arrived at Finglas garda station half-an-hour later.
