Gardai have arrested a suspect after a masked and armed thug robbed a filling station in Co Wicklow.

The raider, armed with a knife and wearing a balaclava, entered the premises in Arklow in broad daylight at around 5pm yesterday while commuters would have been making their way home along the busy road.

He threatened staff before demanding cash from the tills and then escaped in the direction of Briggs Lane .

Gardai were alerted and in a follow-up search a man in his 20s was arrested in connection with the robbery.

The money stolen during the robbery has been recovered.

The raid was described as “opportunistic”.

“This was a local job carried out by a local criminal and gardai were able to respond to the situation very quickly,” a source said.

Gardai across the country are dealing with a spate of service stations robberies every day, with criminals desperate for cash.
