Man pleads guilty to sex with girl (15) at birthday party
a man who had sex with a 15 year-old girl at a party will be sentenced later this week at the Central Criminal Court.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, pleaded guilty to one count of defilement of a child on August 4, 2012 at a location in Meath.
The girl was staying in a friend's house where there had been an 18th birthday party. The man, who was 21 at the time, was also at the party. He tried to kiss the girl but was told she was only 15 years old and had a boyfriend.
The girl went to sleep at 2.30am. At 6am, the man went into the room where she was sleeping and had sex with her.
The girl told her friend about the incident which led to her aunt finding out and informing her parents. She reported the incident to gardai later that day and the man was arrested and questioned. He admitted that he had sex with her and that he had not used a condom.
Initially, a trial date was set but the man made a guilty plea in January 2015. He has been in custody since then. He will be sentenced on April 23 next.
The girl told gardai that she had met the man earlier at a hotel but did not know him. She later shared a taxi with him and another girl to the house where the incident occurred.
In a victim impact statement read to the court by Caroline Biggs SC, prosecuting, the girl, now 18, said she thought of taking her life several times since the incident, and would have but for the support of her family, friends and counsellors.
She said that after the incident she felt "sick at the thought of him being near me" and was worried that people would be "looking at me, talking about me and judging me".
Derek Kenneally SC, defending, said that the man apologised "for the hurt and difficulty and trauma he has caused her".
