Man killed in road tragedy

A MAN was killed early this morning in a road crash.

Gardai were today investigating the circumstances surrounding the single-vehicle crash which occurred at around 3.15am just outside Roscommon town on the Roscommon-Castlecoote Road.

The man, who was in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene and was removed to the morgue at Roscommon hospital. Witnesses are asked to contact gardai on 090 6638300, the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.



Microsoft chief holds aid talks

IRELAND'S EU commissioner Maire Geoghegan-Quinn has met Microsoft founder-turned-philanthropist Bill Gates to discuss a potential aid partnership.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has already joined EU governments and the Commission in funding clinical trials to test drugs to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. Mr Gates and Ms Geoghegan-Quinn discussed the trials, as well as poverty-related diseases, rare diseases and food security.
