Man jailed over gun and drugs

A man who was caught with drugs and a gun has received a seven-year sentence with the final two suspended.

Gardai caught Daniel Cassidy (23) and another man with €23,050 of drugs and a revolver.

Cassidy, of Templeview Copse, Clarehall, Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possessing €21,250 of cannabis, €1,800 of cocaine and a .38 Webley & Scott six-chamber revolver at an underground car park in Burnell Court, North Cross, Malahide on July 23, 2008.



Fitness centre in rental row

A FITNESS centre operator in Dublin's IFSC claims he has been unlawfully ejected in a row over rent arrears.

Z Fitness Ltd, trading as SV Fitness, was yesterday given permission in the High Court to notify the landlords of the building in Mayor Street of its intention to seek an injunction preventing the repossession of the premises. Mr Justice Murphy granted Padraic Lyons, for the company, permission to serve short service of the injunction application on the landlords, the Origin 8 Partnership, and made the matter returnable to tomorrow.



No damage to Barrier Reef

Unesco director-general Irina Bokova said a coal ship that ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef off the northeast coast of Australia did not cause damage. The reef is a listed World Heritage site.

But Ms Bokova told reporters that the UN agency will intervene with "strong messages" if it sees that the reef is in danger from increasing coal exports to China.



Ex-security man settles court bid

A FORMER security man has settled a High Court action in which he claimed he suffered post-traumatic stress after being held for over an hour-and-a-half in a failed robbery.

Christopher Quinlan (41), of Bakers Walk, Kilcock, Kildare, brought the action against Securicor Security Services Ireland (SSI) Ltd, arising out of the incident in Galvone Industrial Estate, Limerick, on May 25, 2003. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed and SSI denied his claims.
