Man is arrested over alleged sex attack at beach
A MAN has been arrested in relation to an alleged sexual assault on a teenage girl in Dublin.
The sickening attack is believed to have occurred near Balbriggan beach in north county Dublin on Wednesday.
It's understood that the schoolgirl had been enjoying the mini-heatwave and had spent the day at the beach with pals.
A source has revealed that the man may have been drinking with a group of friends prior to the attack.
"This is a very serious assault ... it was particularly violent," the source said.
A man in his 20s was arrested yesterday afternoon and was taken to Ballbriggan Garda Station where he is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Gardai are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who may have information, to contact Balbriggan Garda Station on 01 8412202.
Local website Balbriggan.Info has issued a community alert warning to women walking in the area.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the girl and her family, and we hope she recovers from her ordeal and gets back to some form of normality in the future," the post read. "Please be cautious and if you're out and about with friends, stick together."
Local councillor Malachy Quinn said that the incident is "absolutely terrible," and has "left the community in shock".
"The whole neighbourhood is in disbelief ... this kind of thing just doesn't happen here, it's a nice area. The area where the alleged attack took place is well lit, but there is a tunnel that leads to the back beach which is dark.
"It's understood to have taken place somewhere around there," he added.
