A man has appeared in court accused of unlawful possession of Viagra for supply at a Dublin Army barracks.

Tommy McEvoy (37) is accused of two counts of possession of the prescription-only drug at his home and a barracks in 2015.

The supply of Viagra, commonly referred to as "Blue Angel", is listed in legal regulations as being subject to prescription.

Judge Cormac Dunne adjourned the case when it came before Dublin District Court.

Mr McEvoy, of Redford Park, Greystones, Co Wicklow, is charged with keeping Sildenafil, which is sold under the brand name Viagra, at Cathal Brugha Barracks in Rathmines on March 2, 2015.

He is also charged with the same offence at his home address on May 10 that year.

The charges are contrary to the Medicinal Products (Prescription and Control of Supply) Regulations, which govern the availability of medications in Ireland.

When the case was called, defence solicitor Yvonne Bambury asked for more time to go through the charges.

A state solicitor said he was consenting to the adjournment.

Judge Dunne remanded Mr McEvoy on continuing bail to appear in court again on a date next month.

Mr McEvoy has not yet indicated how he intends to plead to the charges and did not speak during the brief hearing.

No details of the allegations against him were heard in court.

Sensation

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer first launched Viagra in 1998. It became a global sensation, backed in the US by a wave of well-known celebrities, including soccer star Pele.

Pfizer's erectile dysfunction drug came off patent in June 2013 and generic versions of the drug are now available.

Despite coming off patent, Viagra has retained its "blockbuster" status, recording worldwide sales of $1.29bn (€1.22bn) in 2015.
