Man charged over alleged imprisonment of girl aged 11
A 35-YEAR-OLD man appeared at a special sitting of Portlaoise District Court charged with falsely imprisoning an 11-year-old girl on a roadside in Co Laois on Wednesday.
Michael Martin, of Shandon Court, Yellow Road, Waterford, was charged with the offence which is alleged to have occurred at Oldtown, Co Laois.
The court was told that when the charge was read to the defendant he denied it.
Gda Declan Quinlan of Abbeyleix Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution at Portlaoise Garda Station yesterday. He said Mr Martin replied: "I was told . . . that the question to the girl was would she identify the man and I was told she could identify no one. On my uncle Mick's life I abducted no one."
The officer asked the defendant be remanded in custody. Defending solicitor Anne Manning said she was seeking bail. Judge Catherine Staines said: "This is one of the worst charges to come before this court."
She remanded Mr Martin in custody to appear again at Cloverhill District Court on March 13.
