Man allegedly had 60,000 pics of child porn

A DUBLIN man has appeared in court charged with possessing and distributing some 60,000 images of child pornography.

Glen McGowan (38) is also alleged to have knowingly produced a video file of a young naked boy sitting in a bath.

He has been ordered not to use any computer file-sharing software during the case.

Judge John Lindsay remanded Mr McGowan on bail with strict conditions to appear before the court in November.

The accused, whose address is not to be published by order of the court, appeared before Tallaght District Court charged with possessing child pornography on his computer, on seven cds, a computer mainframe and two external hard drives at his home on dates between July 2011 and September 2012.

He is further accused of knowingly distributing child pornography on December 26, 2010, and on dates between January 2010 and July 2011.

Mr McGowan is also charged with sexually exploiting a child and with possession of a video file of a young naked boy for the purpose of distribution, public exploitation, sale or show.

Detective Garda Michael McGrath said it will be alleged that Mr McGowan possessed and distributed 60,000 images of child pornography.

Defence lawyer Gabby Deane asked that Mr McGowan not be identified on compassionate grounds, saying his parents are in their 70s and his mother suffers from depression.

Gda McGrath said the alleged victim, a minor, is not connected in any way to the accused.

Judge Lindsay ordered that nothing be reported which would identify, or be capable of identifying, the alleged victim.

The DPP has directed trial in the Circuit Court and Judge Lindsay adjourned the matter for the book of evidence.
