Man (51) dies as car smashes through fence in freak crash
A middle-aged man died after his car ploughed through metal railings and landed on another vehicle in a freak accident.
The tragedy happened last night at the bottom of a steep hill in The Glen area of Cork.
The man, aged 51, suffered multiple injuries and had to be cut free from the wreckage.
He was transferred to Cork University Hospital where he died shortly after being admitted.
One theory as to the cause of the accident is that the victim took ill and lost control of the car.
The two-metre steel railings surround a commercial premises, community centre and car parking area.
An emergency services spokesman said it was "a miracle" more people were not injured given the freak nature of the accident and the busy road.
Gardai have appealed for witnesses.
It was the second road death in Cork in the space of 12 hours after a man in his 70s died in a single-vehicle accident outside the village Knockraha, near Glanmire, on the north eastern outskirts of the city. The victim was the driver and only occupant of the car which ran into a ditch and overturned.
