A man was shot as he sat in a parked car in Tallaght last night.

The victim was named locally as Darren McGarry (28), who is originally from Tymon Road North in Tallaght.

It is believed the would-be assassin had been hiding in wait for him in bushes.

Mr McGarry was driven to hospital after being shot once in the arm. His injuries are not life threatening.

It is understood that the victim had only moved to the area where the shooting took place in recent weeks.

McGarry was shot outside the house at The Grove, Kingswood Heights by a gunman armed with what is believed to be a 9mm pistol.

A number of shots were fired, but the victim was hit just once.

The gunman, who gardai suspect hid in waiting for McGarry, then fled on foot and may have been caught on CCTV.

McGarry was due to have surgery in Tallaght Hospital after he arrived in the medical facility with the bullet still in his arm.

"This individual had a lucky escape as it has all the hallmarks of an attempted murder," a source said.

Labour councillor Mick Duff told the Herald that he had spoken to local residents who were "shocked and horrified" by what has happened in their area.

"It is horrendous, in such a quiet residential area," Mr Duff said. "I hope that if anybody has any information that they will co-operate with the gardai."

One local resident said that they heard a loud noise outside their home at the time of the shooting, but believed it was a banger being let off and thought no more of it.
