Gardai are trying to establish a motive after a 26-year-old man was brutally stabbed in the back after being attacked by a gang in west Dublin.

The incident unfolded at Clifden Drive, Ballyfermot, at around 7.30pm on Sunday when a local man was set upon by a number of youths following an altercation.

The man, who was named locally as Gareth Ryan, suffered a number of stab wounds to his back and was taken to St James's Hospital.

Staff later notified gardai, and it was quickly established that while serious, his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

It is understood that the attack was witnessed by a female friend, but no one has made a statement to investigating officers.

Gardai do not have a description of the culprits and have not recovered the knife used to attack Mr Ryan. No arrests have yet been made.

Sources say that the chief suspects are a local gang of youths who have been heavily involved in anti-social behaviour in the Ballyfermot area.

The incident happened close to where a father and son were shot in a gangland-style attack in March.

Dad-of-nine Martin Clarke and his son Lee were blasted outside their home in Clifden Drive last March 13.

Sources say that there is no connection between the two incidents.
