Lucky dad wins €500k after buying a €20 scratch card
THE luck of the Dubs may not have been with the hurlers at the weekend but one native of the capital was lucky enough to win €500,000 on a scratch card.
As a result, a son of the lotto winner does not have to emigrate.
The lucky scratch card cost him €20.
The dad-of-four, who doesn't wish to be named, said that the €500,000 jackpot will make a world of difference to him and his family.
"One of the kids was looking at having to go away for work, and now I'm able to help them out so they can stay at home," he said.
"I nearly sold our home a few months ago, and now I can pay off the mortgage and credit cards," he added.
Winning the jackpot left the Dublin man stunned.
He said he thought the winnings were actually €50,000 until his wife pointed out that the prize was actually 10 times that.
"I took it home and showed it to my wife and she pointed out that it was €500,000, not €50,000," he said.
The win was the fortunate man's second in a matter of weeks.
"I'd been lucky a few weeks ago on a scratch card when I'd won €1,000, so I thought I'd try my luck again with the same one," he explained.
His family had different reactions to the news that he had won the huge cash prize.
"My daughter said, 'are you sure that's not a dud dad?'" he said.
The man struck it lucky on an All Cash Extravaganza that he picked up at a service station in Lusk last Friday.
The winner is now excitedly planning his first holiday in years with his other half.
"I haven't been on one for years and my passport had expired," he said, adding that "the passport application is all filled out and ready to go".
The half a million euro jackpot is the largest ever to been won on a National Lottery scratch card.
