Liz O'Donnell: Garda traffic corps needs boost
The garda traffic corps should be beefed up as new recruits come on stream, according to the Road Safety Authority.
The group's chairperson Liz O'Donnell pointed out that enforcement is extremely important when it comes to road safety.
"We will be asking the Government to ensure that a percentage of the new recruits, and the new resources put into garda enforcement would be given to road safety.
"The road traffic corps has been reduced during the recession so we are hoping that we will get our figures up again," Ms O'Donnell said.
She said that visibility is hugely important as an enforcement measure. "But of course personal responsibility is also very important," she told the Herald.
Meanwhile, over 200 children from ten primary schools were rewarded for their efforts to improve road safety at an RSA's annual awards ceremony. The awards are presented to first and second class pupils.
