kind-hearted fred among our 'best Dubs'

'bEST DUB' nominee Fred Welstead was "flabbergasted" to be nominated for his efforts to bring some extra joy to families at Christmas time.

Fred (63) has been working quietly for years to distribute minerals and sweets to large families of young children and is seen being as good as Santa Claus.

When 98fm appealed for nominations for a 'Best Dub' award, Fred's daughter-in-law, Anne Marie Welstead, thought of the selfless work being done by her husband Stephen's father, Fred, in Jobstown.

"Fred is a real community man. He's been helping families who have lots of kids for a long time. Every Christmas Eve, he disappears for hours delivering minerals and sweets and gifts to big families," said Anne Marie.

"He has an allotment and he brings lots of vegetables to families and elderly couples in his area.

"He does all this quietly with no fuss. When I heard about the awards, I immediately thought of Fred," she said.

"He's very well known in the community," she added.

When contacted at his home in Drumcarra Green, Fred said: "I'm flabbergasted and amazed. It's just nice to be nominated."

Fred, who has four children and five grandchildren, wanted to play down his efforts to help out other families.

He works for a company that distributes minerals and, in cooperation with the company, he has been able to help families out, he admitted.

He is a keen grower of cabbages, potatoes, onions and several other vegetables and, like many other green-fingered growers, he likes to be able to share what he produces when it is time to pick them, he said.

He said he had no inkling whatsoever that he had been nominated.

He first discovered he was in the running for the 'Best Dub' award when he happened to see his name on Facebook.

Daughter-in-law Anne Marie (31) said she submitted his name to the radio station while she and Fred were sitting on a sofa but he had no idea what she was doing. She hoped that her father-in-law would be successful when the winners are announced on Wednesday as she felt strongly that he deserved the recognition.
