Kind Derek offered to buy my groceries - office junior
Former RTE colleague Niamh Sammon has told of the kindness shown by Derek Davis to other people.
She said that his generous spirit was illustrated in an incident when she joined the Live at Three show as a junior researcher in the 1980s.
Now a director, she said that she wasn't long in RTE at the time.
"I was on the office phone talking to human relations, and they couldn't get my payment through and it was Friday," she said.
"I had only started on the programme. I was sitting really glum in the studio afterwards and Derek came up to me and he said, 'Listen, I couldn't help overhearing that, and if you need a few quid for groceries at the weekend, I'd really be happy to give it to you'.
"It was the loveliest thing that he would try to give a dig-out to a young researcher. I didn't take him up on the offer. But he was just a generous, lovely colleague.
"Everybody always got their Christmas box.
Olive Halpin said Mr Davis was the patron of the Ray of Sunshine Foundation, which does building projects in Africa for disadvantaged children.
"Behind the scenes, Derek was the backbone, and his loss to us is so great," she said.
