Aoibhin Garrihy has opened up about her husband John's trek to the summit of Mount Everest and reveals it was difficult to watch him go on the perilous trip.

The former Fair City actress (29) is married to hotelier John Burke, who is currently in Nepal on a mission to reach the top of the world's highest mountain.

"John was always going to do this - it was such a massive thing for him," she told Irish Tatler.

His departure was made even tougher by Aoibhin's busy Dancing With The Stars schedule, meaning the couple had not seen much of each other in the weeks before his trip.

"It was after a time when I didn't get to see too much of him anyway because I was up in Dublin for the show and rehearsals and he was based in Clare," Aoibhin said.

"The timing was just one of those things. You just had to go with it."

Avalanches

Aoibhin spent a night at Base Camp with John before returning home and is not sure it is somewhere people should be.

"All through the night you could hear the avalanches," she said. "Base Camp is set up on a glacier that moves all the time. All night long you are surrounded by the echoes of these Himalayan giants and the avalanches falling every few hours.

"It's a really strange place, it doesn't feel like humans should be there.

"You can't hold back the tide - if someone wants to do something you have to let them do it."
