Joe swaps scrums for yums as celeb chefs serve up tasty treat for epilepsy

Ireland Rugby head coach Joe Schmidt may be an expert on sports tactics but admits he is completely out of his "comfort zone" in the kitchen.

His lack of culinary skills did not deter him last night, however when he led a team of celebrity chefs to cook a gala dinner for 130 guests in Dublin.

Joe was joined by TV Dragon Gavin Duffy, 2FM's Rick O'Shea and forecaster Nuala Carey who served up chicken supreme in The Sussex restaurant of Dublin's Double Tree By Hilton hotel, all in aid of Epilepsy Ireland.

As the guests tucked into their watercress soup, chicken and mustard sauce, cajun salmon and mango and white chocolate mousse, Joe confessed to the Herald: "I can boil an egg and could subsist for a number of days but I would probably not make it further than a week."

The Ireland coach, however, was determined to shine for a great cause and both cooked and served his wife Kelly and her friends without spilling the soup or even a drop of wine.

The couple's 11-year-old son Luke is an epilepsy sufferer, and Joe is very keen to raise awareness.

"The people who suffer just have a short circuit for periods of their lives and the rest of their lives are completely normal," he explained.

"It about supporting them and helping them be a little bit less self conscious when they have a seizure."

Nervous

RTE's Nuala Carey said she was "a little bit nervous", but Rick O'Shea was quietly confident of his cooking ability.

Rick is an epilepsy sufferer himself and has been patron of Epilepsy Ireland for about eight years.

Peter Murphy, CEO of Epilepsy Ireland, said there are about 40,000 people with the condition in this country and money raised last night will go towards research.
