Jason's 'courageous' kids are doing well, says sister
The sister of Limerick man Jason Corbett, who was killed in the US earlier this year, has said that his children are doing well after moving to Limerick.
Tracey Lynch and her husband David were locked in a battle with Mr Corbett's second wife over his two children Jack (11) and Sarah (9) before they were awarded custody.
She said that the family's grief has been further compounded by the actions of Molly Martens Corbett, who along with her father Thomas Martens, is considered a "person of interest" in the murder case.
Mr Corbett (39) was killed in his home in North Carolina in August after suffering fatal head injuries.
His first wife, Mags, the mother of his two children, died after suffering an asthma attack in 2006.
Now, Ms Lynch said that both children are back in Limerick and doing well.
"It's a really positive environment in our house. It's happy most of the time, but we still miss Jason terribly, so obviously that shadow is always there," she said to the Limerick Leader.
"Jack and Sarah have the bonds formed [with us] from when they were babies and all through their lives.
"It's really just picking up really where they left off from when they moved over to America," she added.
"They are settled well in school. They've a huge network of friends and they are just so resilient. They're very courageous and it's awesome to see how well they do, and it gives you some strength as well to cope with the different challenges we're facing."
Mr Corbett had moved to the US with the children in 2011 where he married Molly Martens Corbett.
Since the custody battle with the Lynches, she has been regularly posting messages and photographs of the children on Facebook and she is continuing with legal action to have the children returned to the US.
However, a file into Mr Corbett's death has been passed to the District Attorney in North Carolina, who can now decide if charges will be brought against Ms Martens Corbett or her father.
Ms Lynch said that it has been a difficult time.
"I don't think I can put it into words the impact that something like this can have on your life," she said. "The loss has just been so difficult for us."
