A TALENTED sixth-class pupil with a visual impairment has won a poetry competition in which he had to mention all 27 EU member states.

Shaun Garry (12), from St John Bosco Senior Boys' School, Navan Road, triumphed in the competition run by MEP Gay Mitchell in conjunction with the Herald.

The prize for the gifted youngster is a trip to the European Parliament in Brussels.

Shaun said he thought his mother was joking when she told him he's won.

"I couldn't believe it," he said.

Sixth-class pupils across the capital had been asked to write a poem that gave a mention to all 27 EU member states.

Mr Mitchell said: "I was absolutely thrilled with the response to the poetry competition I launched in conjunction with the Evening Herald.

"Entries were of the highest standard and really impressed the adjudicator.

"My congratulations go to Shaun, who displayed a remarkable poetic ability.

"I have no doubt that we will be hearing more from the pen of Shaun Garry in future years."

The MEP, who is chasing the Fine Gael nomination for the presidency, added: "There are certainly many talented poets amongst our Dublin school children who showed an intelligent, humourous and clever insight into the EU.

"The sense of pride in Ireland illustrated by these young people is also very heart-warming. It is refreshing to learn that the next generation of policy makers are so astute."
