Irish-American cop dies after being shot in the face while sitting in patrol car

An Irish-American cop has died after he was shot in the face while sitting in his patrol car.

Brian Moore (25) was hit by two bullets, one which went in through his cheek and out the back of his head, shortly after 6pm on Saturday night.

The young police officer, described as being from a 'proud Irish-American background', died this afternoon.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said yesterday it was a 'painful day for all of us, a painful day for all New Yorkers, a painful day for all members of the NYPD'.

Speaking at a press conference held after the incident, Mr de Blasio said, "Police Officer Brian Moore, as you’ve heard, has been very, very seriously wounded. He is a brave young man."

Mr Moore was shot while driving in an unmarked police car with his colleague in the Queens Village area of South Queens.

He was sitting in the driver's seat when they approached a black male in his thirties, who seemed to be adjusting an object in his waistband, NYPD reported in an official statement.

The authorities confirmed Mr Moore 'positioned the vehicle behind the suspect and inquired about the suspect's actions' before he turned and deliberately fired at the vehicle several times.

The two police officers in the car did not have an opportunity to return fire.

"[Moore] comes from a police family," de Blasio said.

"This is what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to be a New York City police officer.

"He wanted to serve and he did so with great distinction. I’ve already had the opportunity to hear from some of the commanding officers who work with him, and who respect greatly his approach to this work and his devotion to the job," he continued.

"Our hearts are with his family, his loved ones – our hearts are with his extended family, the men and women of the NYPD.

"You know, coming from a police family, and seeing the devotion that so many members of his family had to this city – it was striking to be in the room with his family members and realizing this is a family that has been giving their all to the city now for over two generations."

A 35-year-old man has appeared in court charged in relation to the incident, including two counts of attempted murder of a police officer.

Demetrius Blackwell, who has previously served time, is being held without bail.

The incident is the fifth New York police shooting in the last five months.

In December, two officers were shot and killed as they sat in their patrol car.
