A young Galway man has died after he fell into the sea while on holidays with his twin brother at a popular destination in Croatia.

The man, named locally as Eamon Buckley from Moycullen and believed to be aged 19, was on holiday with a large group of friends and his twin brother Liam in the city of Split when the accident occurred at the city's main harbour.

The alarm was raised in the early hours of the morning and a full search was launched by the Split Port Authority and the police.

A search began around 3am and his body was recovered from the water at around 10am. A post mortem will now take place.

It is unclear how the teenager fell into the water. One local report suggested he was walking along a pier when he fell, with another stating he had been on a boat.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was working with the Irish embassy in Zagreb to provide consular assistance to the man's family. His mother Joy is travelling over to Croatia.

Local councillor Noel Thomas said: "Our hearts go out to the young man's family at this time and our thoughts and prayers are with them."

Friends of the popular youngster from the Moycullen minor team met last night in the Forge pub in the village to share their memories.

His twin brother Liam is a first year Arts student at NUIG.

A spokesperson for Moycullen GAA said the community was shocked by the news.

"He was a fantastic young lad from a very good family in the village.

"His loss will be felt by all the members of the community both young and old. He gave us everything he had. He was a fantastic football player."
