THE emigrant daughter of a taxi driver who won €1m broke down crying when she was told the good news.

Martin Burke scooped the top prize in RTE's Million Euro Challenge hosted by Nicky Byrne. Viewers of the show will tonight see how Martin (pictured) won the jackpot.

Mr Burke had previously written to RTE's Joe Duffy about how his daughter emigrated to Canada.

Yesterday he told the presenter's Liveline show how he broke the news to her.

"We skyped her the minute we came home," Mr Burke said.

"The next thing, she started screaming does that cheque say €1m? And I said 'yes', and she started crying," he said.

windfall

The taximan revealed that he wrote a poem called Dream just last month about appearing on a National Lottery game show and winning €1m.

Just two weeks later, he got three stars on a Million Euro Challenge Scratch card.

He said he has no idea what he will do with the windfall and how he has no plans to quit work.

"I think the only thing that may be definite is pay the mortgage," he said.

He revealed that he celebrated his win at home with the family and grandkids with pizza and Chinese takeaway.

He added that the show's host Nicky Byrne was very good and looked after his family very well.
