How orgy of violence unfolded

A bank holiday crime spree in the space of less than 12 hours in the city resulted in one man shot dead, another seriously injured and a taxi driver held at gunpoint.

The three incidents happened within walking distance of each other in the Dublin 1 area.

Gardai are probing if the three incidents were related and are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the shooting.

A taxi driver was the first victim when he was robbed at gunpoint at 7.30pm. He picked up his passenger at Finglas and brought him to Terrace Place in Summerhill. The passenger then produced a shotgun and demanded the taxi's takings.

Then at 11.45pm a man was murdered in cold blood when he blasted in the face and upper body with a shotgun on Killarney Court, near Portland Row, just off North Circular Road. This shooting happened within seven minutes walking distance of the taxi robbery.

And then - a full six hours later - at approximately 6.10am, a 55-year-old homeless man was beaten and robbed in Mabbot Lane off Talbot Street (see graphic right) .

The mayhem in Dublin 1 prompted gardai to respond with a helicopter and this morning the area around the murder scene was cordoned off.

One man has been arrested in relation to the taxi robbery and the assault on the homeless man. Gardai are now trying to establish if there is a link between all three.
