Gardai are investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious death of an 11-month-old baby at an apartment complex.

The alarm was raised by the child’s mother and emergency services were sent to the home in Killarney, Co Kerry, where they discovered the injured baby boy.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics the baby was later pronounced dead.

A man aged in his 30s, who was also at the apartment, was treated by medical staff at the scene before being transferred to Tralee University Hospital.

The incident occurred at Park Place on the High Street in Killarney shortly before 6pm yesterday.

It is believed the injured man is of eastern European origin.

The exact circumstances surrounding the child’s death are not yet known. Officers from Killarney Garda station are investigating the tragedy.

“Gardai are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of an 11-month-old baby boy at an apartment complex in Killarney,” the spokesman said.

“A male aged in his 30s with serious injuries was taken from the scene by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry, Tralee.

“The baby’s body remains at the scene which is currently preserved. The Office of the State Pathologist has been informed and preliminary examination will be carried out by Dr Margaret Bolster,” the spokesman added.

“It’s very, very tragic to see anything happen to a child of 11 months,” said local councillor Donal Grady.

“I don’t ever remember a tragedy like this in the town before.

“The town is only really waking up to what has happened now and it’s shocking,” he added.

Fine Gael’s Bobby O’Connell said the town would rally around the family at the centre of the tragedy.

“It’s very sad the town is in shock, and the whole area is in shock.”
