Holly tells how comic legend Rivers made her 21st bash super-special
Model Holly Carpenter was devastated to hear of the death of comedienne Joan Rivers - the woman who made her 21st birthday extra-special.
Holly took to Twitter to express her grief.
"Genuinely heartbroken over Joan Rivers. I loved her so much, keeping the party hat she gave me forever #RIPJoanRivers x," she wrote.
The Raheny beauty attended Rivers' show at Vicar Street as part of her 21st birthday celebrations in 2012.
She went to the gig with family friend PJ Gallagher who knew Rivers' support act Gearoid Farrelly and he arranged for them to meet backstage.
"I was so star-struck I couldn't believe it was actually her," Holly (22) told the Herald.
"She told me I was pretty and that she loved my coat.
"Then she said 'Happy birthday' and gave me a paper party hat which I still have and adore."
Holly said she is thankful to have had a chance to meet the legendary comic.
"She said what everyone was thinking and never took herself too seriously," she said.
"The world needs more people with that attitude."
Another connection Rivers (81) had with Ireland was on a culinary rather than comedy basis - she contributed to a cookbook for the Friends of St Luke's Cancer Care.
And true to her comedic style, she contributed more with humour than anything else, adding in a recipe for toast.
The ingredients included just two slices of white bread and butter or margarine.
Rivers died in New York on Thursday after several days in the intensive care unit following throat surgery during which she suffered a cardiac arrest.
The comic, who was known for her acerbic brand of humour, had a lengthy career and most recently was host of E!'s Fashion Police, commenting on the unfortunate red carpet choices of Hollywood celebrities.
