Historic Glin Castle for sale after funding plea
The historic Limerick castle owned by actor Dominic West's wife and her family has been put on sale for €6.5m.
Glin Castle, which has been home to the FitzGerald family for 700 years, has been put on the market as the family, who are now based outside of Ireland, say the "practicalities" of keeping the extravagant castle are too much to deal with.
Earlier this year, The Wire star and his wife Catherine, who is the daughter of the last Knight of Glin Desmond Fitzgerald who died in 2011, made a plea for outside investment into the castle as Catherine's mother Madam Olda struggled to maintain it.
However, the FitzGerald's have since made the decision to put the historic family home and its 154 hectare (380 acre) estate up for sale.
West's wife Catherine, a landscape architect, explained that since the death of her father four years ago maintaining the castle had become too much.
"We would have loved to carry it on, but the practicalities of it are a full-time job," she told the Irish Times.
"I work gardens all over, and my husband is away a lot in the US, and this isn't something that can be remotely managed.
"We would love someone who has a feeling for the house's provenance and history to take it on and love it as we have."
Prior to Desmond FitzGerald's death, the family also raised €2m in an auction in 2009 to go towards the castle's future.
Recently, West also suggested that the University of Limerick invest in the castle.
