Helpline is swamped by victims of burglaries
Burglary, assault and harassment are the main reasons why people call the national Crime Victims Helpline (CVH).
Nearly a third of the calls to the freephone and confidential support line now relate to burglaries.
This represents a rise from just under a quarter of calls in 2014 and 2013, and a figure of just 14pc in 2011.
A quarter of calls to the line last year were in the aftermath of assaults, while a fifth related to harassment.
The CVH could not reveal what the figures were for the most recent years.
"Many people understand how an assault can be traumatising to a victim but discount the serious impact of crimes such as burglary and theft," said helpline coordinator Michele Puckhaber at the launch of its annual report for 2014.
"Burglary can be particularly devastating to families with children.
"Many people who ring the helpline are looking for information on how to help their kids after a break-in," she said.
"Adults should do whatever they can to help children feel safe again in their home.
"This may mean temporarily changing the sleeping arrangements, leaving lights on, or adding security," she said.
Two-thirds of the calls made to CVH in 2014 came from women, and Dublin was responsible for the majority of calls - 38pc.
"The CVH provides people with an opportunity to discuss their feelings in a confidential manner with a trained volunteer," said Ms Puckhaber.
"Most callers tell us that they really appreciate being able to talk about what they have experienced with someone who can take the time to listen and support them," she added.
