Grand Canal benches dedicated to volunteers
HARD-WORKING volunteers who give up their time to ensure that the Grand Canal and its surrounds is kept clean have had their efforts recognised by the city.
Two benches were unveiled by the Lord Mayor, Criona Ni Dhalaigh, which are dedicated to their efforts.
"It is said a community thrives when its citizens commit, and the Grand Canal clean-up volunteers are great examples of this adage," she said.
"I am very proud to unveil these benches, in this tranquil canal bank setting, which are dedicated to these unsung heroes."
The benches are located adjacent to the Mespil Road bridge.
The Friends of the Grand Canal group has been running for eight years in the city.
Regular clean-ups are organised to ensure that residents can get the best out of the recreational amenities offered by the canal.
Dublin City Council is also seeking local business who are interested in helping the Grand Canal sub-committee under a corporate social responsibility scheme.
