Government minister in hospital after bike accident
A Government minister is being treated in hospital after being struck by a car while cycling.
Communications Minister Denis Naughten was cycling alongside his wife Mary on the Castlecoote Road, just outside Roscommon town, when he was hit from behind.
It is understood the accident happened just after a sweeping bend and the driver attempted to pass Mr Naughten and his wife safely before colliding with the Roscommon TD, who fell over the handlebars.
Emergency services were on the scene within minutes, according to one witness. The weather with a strong winter sun may have been a factor in the accident.
Mr Naughten, an Independent TD, was taken to Portiuncula Hospital for treatment.
His injuries are not believed to be serious, according to his spokeswoman.
Ms Naughten did not suffer any injuries and accompanied her husband in the ambulance to hospital.
Mr Naughten is a keen cyclist and doctors examined whether he suffered a back injury in the collision. Gardai are investigating the incident.
