'God help whoever gets me', jokes Daniel as he signs up for Strictly role
Daniel O’Donnell looks set to swap singing ballads for salsa lessons as he has been named in the line-up for this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.
The singing sensation’s dance moves caused a stir earlier this week when he performed at the Rose of Tralee final and now Daniel is keen to show off more of his talents on the popular BBC series.
With a successful music career spanning the past three decades, the Donegal crooner (53) has undoubtedly conquered the charts but admitted the dance floor will be more of a challenge for him.
“I don’t know if I’m as good as I need to be but I’m going to try. There’s a lot of rehearsals and physical work which I’m not used to,” he said.
While he might not have two left feet, the unlikely heartthrob said his dancing partner will have their work cut out for them when they start rehearsals.
“I can dance but don’t ask me to be in a certain place at a certain time, this is going to be very hard for me. God help whoever gets me,” he said.
A self-confessed fan of the popular dance series, Daniel said he has been asked to perform on the Strictly Christmas special several times but was always too busy to take part.
“It’s exciting and quite an honour to be asked, because there’s so many people that could be asked,” he added.
Speaking to BBC Radio 2, the 53-year-old said his wife, singer Majella O’Donnell, is 100pc behind his competing.
“She said, ‘You can have time off any time, don’t miss this’,” he said.
Daniel is the eighth contestant to be added to the Strictly line-up – with singer Peter Andre, weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott, broadcaster Jeremy Vine, former Coronation Street star Georgia May Foote, EastEnders actress Kellie Bright and newsreader Katie Derham also confirmed for the new series.
Although the Danny Boy singer was only revealed as a contestant yesterday evening, Daniel is already third favourite to shimmy his way to the Strictly crown.
Bookies Betfair have given the chart-topper 7/1 odds of walking away with the title, while naming former I’m a Celeb star Peter Andre as the likely winner with odds of 9/2, followed by soap actress Georgia at 5/1.
It’s been a busy summer for Daniel as he travelled the country with Majella for their upcoming UTV series on Irish B&Bs, which will be broadcast later this year.
Earlier this month, the couple also became grandparents for the first time when Majella’s daughter Siobhan Shields gave birth to baby Olivia.
