Girls start wanting to be thin aged 10, and half of 11 to 16-year-olds restrict what they eat to stay slim.

More than 1,100 females aged seven to 21 were quizzed by Girlguiding UK for a national survey on binge-drinking, eating disorders, plastic surgery, sexual health and body image.

It found that 24pc of 16 to 21-year-olds would consider having cosmetic surgery, while 12pc of 11 to 16-year-olds would consider having a gastric band or plastic surgery, and 5pc would think about Botox.

Diabetes alert for over-50s

Men over 50 are twice as likely as women to have diabetes without knowing it.

A study of more than 6,700 UK adults aged 52 to 79 found that 502 had type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.

Of the affected men, 22pc did not previously realise they had the condition compared with 12pc of the women.

Type 2 diabetes is linked to lifestyle, and is associated with having a large waist or being overweight.

Around two million people in the UK have type 2 diabetes.

Beach landslide victim named

A woman killed by a landslide at a beach in Tenerife in the Canary Islands has been named as Marion O'Hara (57).

The accident happened yesterday at a small beach at Playa de los Gigantes.

The collapse of a 130ft stretch of cliff on to the beach killed another person and may have buried another two on the popular holiday island.

A UK holidaymaker said the area was known to be dangerous. Howard Williams said: "Police were aware the cliff was dangerous for days."

Car workers back cash cuts

Union workers at Ford's Canadian division have backed a cost-cutting plan.

The contract modifications, which cover 7,000 workers, include no increase in basic wages, a reduction in paid time-off, elimination of a bonus and requirements that new employees contribute to the pension plan.

Production will also end at the company's St Thomas Assembly plant in Ontario.
