GERRY RYAN took cocaine moments before he went on stage to present the Eurovision, it has emerged.

His close friend at the time, Gareth O’Callaghan, told the Herald today that Gerry snorted the drug backstage at the Point in 1994, on what was the highlight of his working life.

Gerry was beamed live to a global audience of 300 million viewers as he presented the show with an unsuspecting Cynthia Ni Mhurchu live from Dublin.

Broadcaster Gareth O’Callaghan said today: “I was told by a number of people, who I thought were reliable sources, that he had taken cocaine on the night of the Eurovision Song Contest.

“I don’t know who the supplier was, but I thought: ‘No, he couldn’t be, on the biggest night of his life – he couldn’t jeopardise that.

“It was almost as if he became a member of the Rolling Stones.”

Gareth O’Callaghan described RTE’s handling of Gerry Ryan’s cause of death as “curious” this week.

A host of star journalists have refused to handle the story, as the state broadcaster tries to brush the issue under the carpet.

However, today’s fresh revelations will cause widespread shock in Montrose, where chiefs are coming under increasing pressure to deal with the death of one of its biggest stars.
