Gardai to turn a blind eye to drivers on strike day
GARDAI are expected to turn a blind eye to driving offences during Tuesday's national strike.
Representatives for the force have indicated they will use "discretion" on the strike day when they come across motorists in breach of traffic laws.
So gardai are unlikely to issue penalty points and fixed charge notices to drivers.
The Garda Representative Association told members that while they would be expected to perform core duties on the day, they could be lenient in handing out traffic penalties.
It is illegal for gardai to strike, but in a statement the GRA called upon members to exercise their discretion carrying out activities not covered by "summary legislation".

In a notice to members, the GRA advised them to take "cognisance of the necessity to issuing the fixed penalty notices".
The association has also asked gardai not to use personal equipment such as laptops and mobile phones for official purposes for 24 hours from 6am on November 24.
Officers who are not rostered to work have been asked to attend demonstrations in support of striking staff but not to carry placards.
Meanwhile, the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors has advised its members to carry out only functions that are assigned to them under the Garda Code.
